This project’s challenge was developing a visual identity for Funeral, a musical artist who focuses on the genres of hyperpop and glitchcore. This design was centralized around Funeral’s extended identity as Siqaeda, bringing forth the problem of how to create and maintain a cohesive identity between the two.
The goal was to design logotypes and illustrations that reflect the emotive energy of Funeral’s music, characterized by distorted textures, high-intensity beats, and introspective themes. The branding should also resonate with Funeral’s audience as well as the hyperpop and glitchcore genres.
The final designs reflected the artist’s emotional depth, sound, and intensity, resulting in a cohesive brand identity that stands out in the digital music landscape.
Thinking of the genres that Siqaeda is involved in, some key words I generated were cryptic, disruptive, and dominating. These inspired my two logotype solutions which both feature sharp, jagged edges reflective of his sound. The solutions both fluctuate in wideness and thinness, symbolizing his high-intensity sound contrasting against his introspective and darker themes.
The cicada illustrations were a one-to-one translation from the name “Siqaeda”, but once again combining his haunting and unsettling themes by including a skull in the body of the cicada. The colors red and black were already consistent with Funeral’s branding, as seen on his album cover, “Suicide Season”. This album’s art also inspired different variations of his character designs, as well as some graphics.
The following designs were made with the intention to be incorporated onto clothing. However, these designs can be utilized in many different ways such as song covers, posters, etc.
The designs reference specific song titles by the artist, directly relating to the artists dark aesthetic as funeral, and the brand Siqaeda.
The clothing designs give fans a chance to own a piece potentially representing some of their favorite songs from the artist.
funeral - eyeless
funeral - ilovewhenibleed
funeral - pentagram
This project challenged me to step outside of traditional branding approaches and tap into a darker, more experimental visual language. Translating the intense emotionality and genre-bending energy of Funeral and Siqaeda into a cohesive identity pushed me to think more conceptually about how music can influence design.
